The First Week After a Move: What to Unpack First
I can't tell you how many times I've walked into a beautiful new home and found a family eating takeout on moving boxes, searching for the coffee maker, and wondering where to begin.
Moving into a new home is exciting, but by the time the last box comes off the truck, most people are exhausted. The excitement of moving day quickly gives way to hundreds of little decisions.
Which room should we tackle first?
Where should everything go?
Do we need to buy organizing products before we unpack?
If that's where you are right now, take a deep breath.
You don't have to unpack your entire house this week. You just need to unpack the right things first.
After helping families settle into new homes throughout Sherman, McKinney, and North Texas, I've learned that a little strategy goes a long way. Here's where I recommend starting.
1. Make the Kitchen Functional First
You don't need a picture-perfect pantry on day one.
Instead, focus on making the kitchen usable.
Start with:
Coffee maker (or whatever starts your morning)
Everyday dishes and glasses
Silverware
Pots and pans you use regularly
Basic cooking utensils
Paper towels and cleaning supplies
Once you can prepare meals and find what you need without opening five boxes, the entire house begins to feel more manageable.
2. Create a Comfortable Bedroom
After a long day of unpacking, you deserve a place to rest.
Prioritize:
Bedding
Pillows
Nightstands
Phone chargers
A week's worth of clothing
Laundry hamper
You don't have to organize the entire closet immediately. Simply having a peaceful place to begin and end the day makes a huge difference.
3. Set Up the Bathrooms
Few things add stress like searching for a toothbrush or clean towel after a long day.
Unpack:
Toiletries
Towels
Medications
Hair dryer
Shower essentials
Toilet paper
These small comforts help your new house start feeling like home.
4. Create a Landing Zone
One of the easiest habits to establish in a new home is a designated place for everyday essentials.
Choose one location for:
Keys
Wallets
Purses
Backpacks
Mail
Sunglasses
Starting this routine from day one helps prevent clutter before it begins.
5. Don't Buy Organizing Products Yet
This one surprises people.
Many homeowners rush out to buy bins, baskets, and drawer organizers before they've even lived in the space.
Give yourself a little time.
As you settle into your daily routines, you'll naturally discover what belongs where. Then you can purchase organizing products that truly fit your home and your lifestyle.
6. Let Your Home Teach You
One of my favorite things to tell clients is:
"You don't have to have all the answers today."
Live in your home for a little while.
Notice which cabinets you naturally reach for.
See where shoes tend to collect.
Pay attention to how your family moves through the house.
Those patterns will help you create organizing systems that actually last.
7. Give Yourself Permission to Ask for Help
Moving is exhausting.
By the time the boxes arrive, many people are physically and mentally worn out. It's no surprise that boxes sometimes sit unopened for weeks—or even months.
There is no prize for doing it all yourself.
Sometimes having someone help unpack, organize, and create functional systems from the very beginning saves time, reduces stress, and helps your new home feel settled much sooner.
